Eon started a brand-new series — Eon the Explorer — flying around the planet on Google Earth to visit famous places and learn their stories. First stop: a giant clock that sparked his curiosity.

Big Ben — London's giant clock

Big Ben is the huge clock tower at the end of the Houses of Parliament in London, England (part of the United Kingdom). Here's a fun secret: "Big Ben" is really the nickname of the giant bell inside — but almost everyone uses it for the whole tower. Eon's quest was to find it himself on Google Earth by searching and recognizing London.

The Statue of Liberty — New York's welcome

Across the ocean in New York City, USA, stands the Statue of Liberty — a tall green statue holding a torch. She was a gift from France more than 100 years ago, and she welcomed people arriving by ship. Going from Big Ben to Lady Liberty means hopping across the Atlantic Ocean — two countries, one quick flight on the map.

Why landmarks matter

A landmark is a doorway into geography (where places are) and history (what happened there). Learn one famous building, and you pick up a city, a country, and a story all at once.

Try it

Open Google Earth and search "Big Ben", then "Statue of Liberty." Which one is in Europe, and which is in North America? (Big Ben → Europe; Statue of Liberty → North America.)
